Healthy Low Carb Diet

I have always led an active lifestyle and eaten whatever I liked, without ever worrying about weight gain. But on reaching retirement age I was struck down with a health problem that changed all this.

Due to the lack of activity and comfort eating of convenient foods during this period, my weight increased greatly

With the help of my Consulting Physician, I started on the road to recovery, and it became obvious that the extra weight I had accumulated would hinder this, so I set out to correct that too

The first move was to get educated on a dieting and weight loss program. So I spent a few afternoons at my local library and came away with a few books that seemed to be the most reasonable and the most helpful for my particular lifestyle.

At the end of my search, the decision was made to go on a controlled low carb diet, such as the Atkins low carbohydrate diet. This sounded easier to maintain than any other diets I had investigated, because it allowed you to eat the food that you would normally enjoy, but with a few variations

The second move was to go through my pantry and refrigerator and tossing out everything that went against what the low-carb book said I should be eating. I was amazed at how little was left. Only at that moment did I truly see how unbalanced my diet had been.

Obviously sugar, snacks, cookies, sweets and chocolate had to go. Potatoes, bread, and spaghetti to be replaced with fresh vegetables and fruit

I began to collect low carb recipes and adapted them to our family’s life style With their encouragement, the change to low carb was not too difficult, and in fact after adapting a few menus the whole family began to enjoy their food also.

Apart from the carbohydrate controlled diet I also I took a daily multivitamin with minerals, including potassium, magnesium and calcium, but without iron. And a tbsp of Cod Liver Oil for Omega 3

Long story short: Three years after I was diagnosed with my health condition, I am happen to report a complete recovery, thanks to the help from my medical adviser and specialist. And over 42 pounds lighter, thanks to my healthy low carb diet
