| The joys of summer are many, but time spent in the sun, sand, surf and swimming pool can leave skin dry and flaky. A little extra care this summer will go a long way in keeping skin moist, supple, and healthy. Here are some ways you can make your skin glow this summer:
Exfoliate
Exfoliating gently sloughs off dead skin cells to reveal fresh, smoother skin. Natural skin exfoliants include alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), such as glycolic acid derived from sugar cane. When applied to the skin it has a sloughing action that removes the dry, dead outer layer of skin over time, revealing vibrant, healthier looking skin below.
Apply Sunscreen Every Day
Daily use of sunscreen is still the best way to protect your skin from over exposure to the sun's rays, which can cause skin damage and premature aging. Be sure to use a sunscreen that provides both UVA and UVB protection. Look for ingredients such as titanium dioxide and avobenzone. There is a new sunscreen that offers much stronger protection against UVA rays, which are the most dangerous. The ingredient is called Mexoryl SX . As it is newly approved by the FDA, so far it is only found in a few products, including La Roche Posay Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15.
Try a Self-tanner for a Sunless Glow
Get a "sun-kissed" tan without the sun by using a sunless tanner. There are dozens of great products available that will give you a natural looking tan that lasts an average of two to five days. New formulations on the market will give you a streak-free "tan" without that nasty orange look of old. Some products are designed to be applied daily for a gradual tan, while others will give you a golden glow in about three hours.
Get a Chemical Peel
Chemical peels can be an effective way of reversing premature aging. They are helpful in minimizing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and skin discolorations. Peels can make your skin look softer, smoother, and more refined. The stronger, most effective peels are available from dermatologists or aestheticians, although milder home peel kits are available in drug stores.
